The bloke who ran on to the pitch died after I think. I bit young to remember this at the time but it takes hold of the stand so quickly it is hard to believe. Amazing that people never realised that smoking in wooden stands could represent a risk. ditto the underground and the Kings Cross fire - started in a similar way.

Me too, Green Street. If memory serves it was during Grandstand and I remember, was it Dickie Davies, saying "let's go over to Bradford as there are reports of a fire in a part of the ground" and then it all played out on our screens

Horrific, indeed.

I remember when they went over to the ground showing it live. I have an image of someone appearing in the stand completely alight and unable to move. They were already dead where they stood, no one could have saved him/her.

Shocking how quickly it happened. And so many people made fatal ( but probably understandable) , split second decisions to try and get out the wrong way.

They used to make you watch this when you were doing your safety ticket training on the underground. They had a clock running to show how quickly it took a hold.

Horrific.

An absolute tragedy.

BT Sport have a very good and very moving film about this. It's on at 9 tonight. well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Some of those who died were still sitting upright in their seats, covered by remnants of tarpaulin that had fallen from the roof

Fucking hell

I used to do event security and they made you sit through the cctv footage as part of training. Anyone who couldn't hack that was sacked.

Absolutely shocking how quick it spread. Think most who died tried to get out of the back turnstile or something and it was locked. Dreadful.

Started the same as the kings cross fire a few years later...

Very sad, horrible video of an older guy running on the pitch alight. Ming

Started by a cigarette, old stand went up like a bonfire.
